Clock tower, Cardiff Castle
With a history spanning nearly 2,000 years, the castle dates back to Roman times. After the Norman Conquest the Castle's Keep was built, and a number of Medieval fortifications and dwellings followed.
From 1865, the 3rd Marquess of Bute restored and transformed the castle, employing the genius architect William Burges to create lavish and opulent interiors, with individual themed rooms including Mediterranean gardens, and Italian and Arabian decorations.
