Birmingham in black and white
Canals, waterways and industrial scenes
Report and photos © urban75 2005/7
We had a morning to ourselves before catching the train back to London, so took a long stroll around the old canals and some run down areas in central Birmingham.
Birmingham's 114 miles of waterways were once among the busiest in the world, moving goods in and out and bringing in coal from the Black Country for the furnaces of the metal industry.
Happily, much of the canal network remains intact and navigable - so much so that Birmingham is said to have more canals than Venice!
