W Hammond, 'the original Whitby Jet Shop.'
Whitby jet is a local, semi-precious stone created from fossilised wood, that can be polished to create shiny black artefacts (hence the phrase 'jet black').

Quality objet d'art seen in Whitby shop window. Isn't it just, err, lovely?
