Then and Now: Acre Lane by Branksome Road
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
c. 1900 A horse carriage ambles down Acre Lane towards central Brixton in this scene from 1900. To the right, you can just make out the turning into Trinity Square, situated between two sturdy Victorian villas. Note the large gardens lining the left hand side of the street.

Jan 2004 A century later and the gardens have vanished under a road widening scheme, and the Victorian villas have been replaced by an undistinguished set of modern buildings. The building to the far right houses a VW car spare parts store while a large Tesco supermarket (and customer car park) dominates the left hand side of the street.
