Then and Now: Acre Lane (west), Brixton

c. 1900 Looking east down Acre Lane, past the junction with Strathleven Road, you can see the Hope and Anchor public house to your right. Previously known as the Hope Tavern and Tea Gardens, it is one of Brixton's earliest pubs, and appears on an 1829 map of the area.

April 2003 The Hope and Anchor pub still remains open, although it was completely rebuilt in a Dutch style in 1935. Next door, the 1938 six-storey Sandhurst Court dominates the scene.
