Then and Now: Milkwood Road/Poplar Walk Road, SE24
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
1951 In this quiet December scene, a city-bound No 48 tram passes a near-deserted strip of small shops. Further down the road you can just see a southbound tram waiting to traverse the single track. The sign above the Chemist's shop (second building on the left) advertises 'Meggezones' - sore throat pastilles that are still available in 2003!

April 2003 Fifty years on and not much has changed. The chemist has acquired a satellite dish and turned into the 'Venus Fish Bar', while a modern glass and concrete building has sprung up further down the road. The trams have, of course, long disappeared, to be replaced by the endless rumble of noisy, polluting cars (the more I take these pictures, the more I can see the devastating impact cars have had on the urban environment)
