Then and Now: Brixton Station Road/Brixton Road
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
c. 1964 Looking west along Brixton Station Road towards central Brixton. Note the selection of small shops on the right and the Commer van parked outside the furniture stores. The white building in the background is part of the Bon Marche empire on Brixton Road.

Dec 2003 Most of the small shops were swept away during the 1970s development of the Brixton Recreation Centre, a useful community resource blighted with an unfriendly and brutalistic façade. Note the shortening of the tower in the background and the market stalls to the left.
