Then and Now: Effra Road, looking south
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
c. 1930 Pedestrians stroll down into the centre of Brixton in this near-rural scene. Photographed looking south from the the junction with Brixton Road, you can see the Budd Memorial to the right, with the 1822 St Matthew's church behind. To the left, a large signpost advertises Raleigh College, which had a Bishop Monzani Heard as its headmaster in 1922.

May 2003 Now an extremely noisy thoroughfare, the east side of Effra Road has changed considerably in seventy years, with the college being replaced by a modern housing development and the creation of Windrush Square (far left). St Matthew's church is still extant, although the church now shares the space with a nightclub and a restaurant.
