Then and Now: Railton Road by Effra Parade
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
c. 1912 This view was taken half way up Railton Road, looking back into Brixton past the corner of Effra Parade. On the left is The George public house, with its signs advertising bottled Bass beer and 'Noted Malt Liquors, Wines and Spirits'.

June 2003 By the 1970s, Railton Road had become a run down inner city area, known locally as 'The Frontline'. The area was the epicentre for the 1981 Brixton Riots, during which the George was burnt down and several other buildings damaged. A new pub, Harmony (formerly Mingles), now stands on the site of The George.
