Then and Now: Brixton Tate Library and Brixton Theatre
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
c. 1900 This 19th century view shows the tower of the 1894 Brixton Theatre, to the left of the Tate Library. The theatre stood behind the library, but was flattened during a World War Two air raid on the 8th November 1940.

April 2003 Over a 100 years later and the Tate Library seems completely unchanged! The Theatre entrance has now been replaced by a modern extension to the 1911 Ritzy Cinema, while the theatre's foundation stone, laid by distinguished actor Henry Irving, has been moved to the edge of the Tate Library Gardens.
