Coldharbour Lane viewCentral Brixton, London SW9 8LF[Map location]. Published 23rd July 2012 Things look pretty quiet along Coldharbour Lane in this 1958 view. To the left can be seen an army surplus and industrial clothing store and what looks like a sign for a 'Doll's Hospital.' A large billboard advertises OXO, while a pair of bikes have been parked up along the kerb, presumably unlocked. [pic: Lambeth Archives] Over half a century later, the scene looks pretty much unchanged athough the lack of traffic is deceptive. The road is normally far busier but road works at the junction with Brixton Road had closed off one lane. A panoply of road signs, shop signs and 'A Boards' have introduced some unattractive clutter to the scene, but the trees are a welcome addition. The red brick building with the cupola in the distance - formerly a furniture store - remains but now operates as a McDonalds restaurant. « back to history homepage next page » |
