Then and Now: Coldharbour Lane/Shakespeare Rd
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
c1921 This view was taken looking west down Coldharbour Lane, showing the long sweep of the Victorian mansion blocks. Behind the photographer, to the left, is the junction with Shakespeare Road. The overhead tram lines can be seen, while the tobacconist shop on the corner advertises 'Mitchells Prize Crop' cigarettes.

July 2003 Eighty years on and the view looks almost unchanged. The tobacconists is now called 'Red Herring', a mysterious shop that never seems to open, while the infamous 'Control Tower' cafe next door offers a 'Taste of Jamaica'.
