Then and Now: Brixton Road tram works
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
1904 Brixton Road echoes to the sound of hundreds of pickaxes digging up the road in preparation for the L.C.C. tramway electrification works. This photo was taken by the junction with Atlantic Road, looking south towards Lambeth Town Hall.

Jan 2004 The trams have (sadly) long since disappeared and the road has been substantially widened to accommodate ever-growing traffic levels. The shop awnings have all vanished and the building closest to the camera rebuilt in the late 1980s. Taking this photo proved to be quite a risky venture as it involved jumping out inbetween fast moving cars!
