Then and Now: Dorrell Place crossing
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
1963 A busy summer street scene, photographed at the Brixton Road crossing by Dorrell Place. Note the restrained 'SALE' poster in the window of British Home Stores (BHS), to the left of the picture. The building covered by scaffolding is the 1930 Art Deco Marks and Spencer store, which replaced earlier premises by the Exchange Stores of Francis & Son.

Dec 2003 The traffic lights have now been supplemented with pedestrian crossing lights to help deal with the horrendous traffic levels on Brixton Road. The BHS has now become a 'Superdrug' store, while Marks & Spencer continues to trade from their popular store.
Dec 2003 A late December scene showing Christmas shoppers, laden with bags.
