Then and Now: Brixton Road and Ferndale Road
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
1910 Brixton Road, looking north. Quin & Axtens, department Store, is seen in the background on the left, with Cooper & Son's tailoring shop opposite. Everyone in the photograph is wearing a hat of some kind - note the top hatted gentlemen to the left and the man with a bowler hat to the far right. A passing Stockwell-bound open topped bus bears a large advert extolling the virtues of 'Epp's Cocoa - grateful and comforting'.

June 2004 The Quin & Axtens department store was destroyed in May 1941 and the refurbished building now serves as mixed use office/retail space. The old boot shop is now the Beehive public house. Hats fell out of fashion in the 1950s, although if you look hard you can just make out a solitary baseball cap to the right!
